Did You Know?

A Pomchi is a cross between a Pomeranian and a Chihuahua. These little dogs can have sassy and playful personalities. They bond closely with their families and are loving and affectionate with them.

Pomchis are loving little dogs that bond closely with their favorite humans and love nothing more than being near them. Socialization and training early and often are important as these dogs can have a diva attitude that results in aggression, nervousness, etc. if they are not properly socialized.

As long as they are well-socialized and well-trained, they tend to get along well with children that know how to properly interact with small dogs as well as other dogs and pets in the family. They can be initially suspicious of strange people and animals, but tend to warm up once introduced.

These little dogs are also vocal and prone to barking a lot. You may not be able to stop barking completely, but if you train your dog to stop barking early on, you can keep this from becoming a nuisance behavior.

A Pomchi is a highly adaptable dog. Although they need to bundle up in some winter dog products to stay warm when it’s cold, they do well in most climates. They also adapt well to apartment living as well as larger homes.

Because they bond so closely with their families, they do not like to spend long periods of time alone. This also means they can be prone to developing separation anxiety if you don’t work with them on this early on.

Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Pomchi include progressive retinal atrophy, epilepsy, hypothyroidism, and cataracts. Good breeding practices make a big difference.

Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies, so make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances.

A Pomchi is intelligent and can be eager to please, but they can also have a stubborn streak. This can sometimes be a challenge for first-time dog owners to handle alone, so it’s not a bad idea to be prepared to enroll in puppy training classes. Although they may attempt to push boundaries and get their own way, Pomchis generally respond well to clear, consistent training that is focused on praise and reward.

A Pomchi can inherit a short coat from their Chihuahua parent, a fluffy double-coat from their Pomeranian parent, or a mix of both. Regardless of coat type, they will shed moderately year-round. Generally, brushing a few times a week and the occasional bath as needed is sufficient. If they have a fluffier Pom coat, then you may need to visit the groomer every 4-6 weeks as well.

In addition to coat care, you will also need to take care of your Pomchi’s nails, ears, and teeth. Cutting your dog’s nails once or twice monthly is usually sufficient to keep them from growing too long. Ear checks on a weekly basis and careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections.

As a small dog breed, a Pomchi is more prone to developing dental diseases. This makes good dental care for dogs early and consistently throughout your dog’s life essential. Daily tooth brushing plus cleanings at the vet as needed are a good start.

Pomchis are small dogs that sit in a lower activity range. Although they will be energetic when they play, they also tend to tire quickly and don’t need a lot of exercise to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus some playtime are usually enough for this little dog.

They love being around you, so they will likely be up for more activity if you are. Just keep an eye on them to make sure they are not overheating or overexerting themselves trying to keep up with you.

Fully-grown Pomchis usually stand 6-10 inches tall and weigh 4-12 pounds.

Pomchis generally live for 12-18 years on average.

Pomchis are also sometimes called Chi-Poms, Pom-Chis, Pomahuahuas, and Chimeranians.
