The McNab family in Northern California developed the breed in the late 1800s. By the mid-1940s the McNab Shepherd was one of the most popular sheepdogs in the Mendocino region. They have collected several nicknames over the years, including the McNab, McNab Herding Dog, McNab Sheepdog, McNab Cattle Dog, McNab Collie, and McNab Stock Dog.

2. They Are Versatile Herding Dogs

McNab Shepherds are characterized by their “loose-eyed” herding style. Not only does this herding style allow them to work more independently than other herding breeds, but it also means that they can both head and heel stock.

Their ability to drive livestock forward from behind, turn them from the front, and manage all directions in between made them popular and valuable herding dogs. Although they were originally bred for herding sheep, their skills, athleticism, and versatility made them great herding dogs for several other types of livestock as well.

Although the original 10,000+ acres of the McNab family ranch now consists of wineries, the area is still referred to as the “McNab Valley”. The McNab Shepherd has been well-known in and around this region of Northern California. But, until recently, they were relatively unknown outside of the region and outside of sheepherding.

Thanks to their skills as herding dogs and dedicated enthusiasts for the breed, the McNab Shepherd continues to live on and is gaining recognition. These dogs are not yet recognized by the American Kennel Club, but they can be registered with the McNab Shepherd Registry.

4. They Are Family-Oriented

McNab Shepherds may be determined and hardworking dogs that are used to working independently on the job. But, they are also family-oriented dogs. They bond closely with their families and are affectionate with them.

Sensitive and in tune with their favorite humans, they make dedicated family companions. As long as they are well-socialized and trained, they get along with children, dogs, and other pets that are part of the family. Used to watching over their families, herds, and property, these dogs are also good watchdogs and will be initially wary of strangers.

5. McNabs Are High-Energy Dogs

McNab Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Although they can kick back and relax once in a while, you will probably run out of energy before they do. Daily walks plus some time to run, other activities, and a job to do are a good start.

The good news is that these dogs are athletic and versatile, and were bred for endurance.
