4 Things to Know About Chihuahua Puppies

Chihuahuas, affectionately referred to as Chis, are tiny dogs that tend to have big personalities. They tend to be charming little dogs that love their favorite humans. Although they have a reputation for being bold and sassy, they can also sometimes be shy. Here are a few more things to know about Chihuahua puppies:

1. The Chihuahua is one of the Oldest Dog Breeds of the Americas

Because the Chihuahua is featured in ancient paintings from around the world, it’s hard to pinpoint their exact origin. That is currently considered a secret from before recorded history. What we do know is that the Chihuahua’s ancestors came to the ancient peoples of Mexico at some point over a thousand years ago. The Chihuahua as we know it today originated there and they are one of the oldest dog breeds of the Americas.

The Toltecs were a prominent civilization in Mexico around a thousand years ago. The predecessor of the modern Chihuahua, the Techihi, was their dog breed of choice. In the 12th century, the Aztecs conquered the Toltecs and also favored the Techihi. The Aztecs bred the Techihi to be a lighter, smaller dog and they are credited with refining the breed into the modern Chihuahua.

These little dogs were widespread throughout the region. North Americans started to become interested in them during the mid-1800s. As interest increased, many of these dogs were found in the State of Chihuahua, which is how they got their name. They’ve been a popular toy breed ever since.

2. They Can be Great Family Dogs

Because some Chi owners do not properly socialize and train them, Chihuahuas have a reputation for being yappy, nippy little dogs. Although poor socialization and training can result in a Chihuahua that is prone to biting or nipping, this is not usual behavior for the breed.

A well-socialized and well-trained Chihuahua will bond closely with their humans and can be a bit wary of strangers at first, but they will not be aggressive. They do tend to have a sassy personality, but they are generally gentle and friendly with children and other pets. Although they can be prone to barking, you can start to train your dog to stop barking early to help curb it so it does not become a nuisance.

This makes them a great family dog as long as you socialize and train them properly. This ensures they are confident, well-adjusted, and well-mannered dogs and also goes a long way in avoiding “small dog syndrome”. Your Chi will probably still be a bit of a diva at times, but it should not be a behavioral issue.

3. You May Want to Consider Training Classes

Chihuahuas are generally easy to train. They are intelligent, eager to please, and pick up on things quickly. Because they are generally easy to train, it’s also easy to inadvertently train them into undesirable behaviors.

They can also be stubborn and will tend to push boundaries to try and get what they want. For these reasons, puppy training classes can be a good idea, especially for first-time dog owners. Not only do these classes offer opportunities to socialize a puppy, but they also help you keep training consistent and strengthen the bond you have with your puppy.

4. Chihuahuas Don’t Need Much Exercise

Although Chihuahuas are energetic and playful, they are also small. This means they usually tire themselves out pretty quickly and easily. Daily walks plus some playtime are usually enough for this dog breed.

Sometimes, just running around inside can be enough extra activity for them. Because they get tired easily, they can also overexert themselves. So, you will want to keep an eye on them to make sure they’re not overdoing it.
