5 Things to Help You Winterize Your Puppy

Cozy dogWinter is in full swing and your pup is definitely feeling the chill. While we bundle up to battle the cold, we often forget that our dogs also may need a little layering as well.

Here are a few things you may want to consider making or purchasing to keep your puppy comfy and cozy throughout the colder months:

1. Snuggle Sack

For small and large dogs, snuggle sacks are wonderful additions to a dog bed to keep your dog warm and cozy. You can make your own with a thick or flannel pillowcase or you can purchase them online. If you want to make your own, you will need some sewing skills and a little patience.

2. Booties

Giving your pup boots during the winter as well as the summer will help keep their paws safe from extreme weather and chemicals that can be found on the sidewalk and roads. Again, there are several DIY booties you can make but for the winter it is best to invest in good dog booties* (Amazon Affiliate Link) with rubber soles. Your dogs may not be happy when you first put them on but they will appreciate it in the long run. These booties can keep a dog’s paws from becoming dry, cracked, and painful when out for a walk or hike.

3. Sweaters

It may seem simple but dog sweaters* (Amazon Affiliate Link) and jackets can help keep your dog warm and happy on morning walks or after-work strolls. Be sure to purchase sweaters and jackets that are well-fitting or at least larger than needed. This way, your pup won’t feel uncomfortable or constricted. You should also be sure to purchase sweaters and jackets with organic material. This way, they will not have rashes you will need to combat during the winter or other skin issues.

4. Paw Balm

Paw balm can be a lifesaver for dry, cracked paws. A dog’s paws can become dry, painful, and brittle as the seasons change. Paw balm moisturizes and repairs the skin and can keep the pup comfortable and happy. You can purchase paw balm online or at your local pet store or you can make your own. If you are in a pinch, you can also use shea butter or coconut oil.

5. Insulated Bed

If you have a dog bed, but your pup still can’t seem to get warm, you may want to purchase an insulated dog bed* (Amazon Affiliate Link). This will help them stay warm and cozy during the winter months. If you purchase an insulated bed or a bed with a heating element, be sure to keep it away from flammable fabric or materials. This way, you and your family are safe and comfortable.
