I currently have a beautiful 15yr old Border Collie that is a rescue. She is absolutely best dog I have ever had and will never own another breed. She is very personable and has bonded with my wife to the point that they are inseparable. She is still very healthy and active for a 15yr old. Very smart to the point she keeps her own diet. Once a day regular meals in the evening but we call her a treat monster from her constant love of them. Her name is Alibi and craves social attention always and never alone. At her age we want to get her a playmate that she can mother and have a friend until she passes on. Even though she is 15 everyone who meets her thinks she is still a young adult. She has a daily routine with my wife and goes for a 1-2 mile walk every morning then comes in and leans on my feet while I get my work boots on for work. Such an excellent breed and has absolutely never went to the bathroom in our house after 4yrs of having her. We barely ever leave her home alone but in the rare cases we have she sits in the window and waits for us to return. We are always greeted at the door with her favorite animal in her mouth and tail going crazy with joy! Blessed to have found this spectacular animal.

Border collies are good, energetic dogs. In the farm we use our collie for herding. She is a loyal and nice dog.

I rescued an older Border Collie named Kacie about eight years ago. She was with us a little over three years, but what a wonderful three years it was. She was gentle, affectionate, loyal, and at her age, not too active for a couple of old folks. Kacie remains arguably the best dog I ever had, and I've had some great ones.

I got a Border Collie puppy in May 2021. She is a girl, and we name her Cookie. Cookie is the BEST dog that we can imagine. She is quiet (very rarely bark), smart, and she seems to know how to act cutely. She also seems to read people's emotions very well and act accordingly. I and my boyfriend always feel our hearts melt when we play with her. All of my friends say Cookie is an angel. We feel so lucky to get her. She is like our real kid and family member. We will love her forever.

Based on our experience with Ainslie, Border Collies make incredible family pets. She's warm, caring, and friendly with everyone, including other dogs. As she's gotten older though, she prefers herding her canine friends vs play! The ability to understand spoken language and body language are mind blowing! This is why it's so important to get a good obedience trainer and that your command terms are consistent. Be sure that you have enough room in your schedule for exercise, too. They really need a good run each day.

I've had my Border Collie (oreo) for 10 years. She's been my best friend. She loves kids, she's great with other animals. She likes to take long walks and loves to play in water. She's my whole world so I really reccomend bringing a border collie into your home!

Common Health Issues: Sadly, Epilepsy and Deafness is becoming more common in this breed. Be aware and educated. The breed is not for the couch potato owner. But also, that does not mean they need to be mindlessly exercised. Structured obedience classes using positive methods, agility, nosework, and of course herding can be emphasized enough. They're not always good with small children either. All the loud screaming, quick movements, etc. can elicit herding behavior. They want to CONTROL MOVEMENT.

Border Collies are so observant and in tune with their owners. They pick up on language VERY quickly, which makes training a lot of fun. Our girl, Ainslie, fit in very well with our children and routine. She is such a joy!

Border Collie Breed Review by Maroza J

These dogs are simply AMAZING. Moving into an apartment after college, I felt quite lonely and decided on getting a small little pupper to keep me company. However, that ended up not being the case because somehow I stumbled upon this breed from my friends. Since then, I've been obsessed, and I never wanted to have another dog breed. I got my first Border in 1994. Best decision I've ever made. No, I can't say she was perfect. No dog is. Yes, she had a herding instinct and would herd just about everything, she outsmarted me at times, was stubborn in the beginning, but even after all that, she was worth it. I loved her more than anything. With lots of training and patience, they can become amazing dogs. They are SO loyal, and have so much energy! I hear a lot of things on the internet saying that you can't own a border collie if you don't live on a farm because they are too energetic and will destroy everything if you don't exercise them endlessly, but, let me tell you that isn't true. Of course, they are very energetic dogs because they were bred to herd. And yes, they can be destructive. But they do get used to your routine and how much exercise they receive. (They should be receiving at least 2 hours, but it does not mean that they will destroy everything unless you're a very lazy person and walk them less than once a day) Taking them on a half hour walk before you go to work/school, coming home and walking them for another half an hour, and the rest of their energy can be taken out by some indoor playing, (they're great with kids! They'll never get bored with a border.) Or another walk at night. That can all be perfectly enough. Again though, I can't speak for your border collie. They are also quite vocal and wary of strangers, meaning they will bark at the sight of people they don't know. (Personally though, I taught mine to keep quiet which didn't take long at all considering how intelligent they are.) Intelligence should not be mistaken for ease of training though. They are very smart dogs and can pick up new tricks super easily, but they can pick up bad habits just as easily as new ones. Therefore, you should train consistently and don't stop training even when they know the basics. Amazing agility skills, too. And in my opinion, they are beautiful dogs, even though they usually aren't bred for their looks. They also lean towards 'one man's dog,' meaning they will pick one person out of a household to listen to and stick to for the rest of their lives. They will listen to others, but they have a 'main' owner. If you want a loyal, intelligent, playful, energetic best friend, then consider getting a border collie. :)

Border Collie Breed Review by Neil Streit

For me, living on a 115 acre farm, my border collies have been indispensable. They're loyalty, devotion, attentiveness, obedience and high energy have made my life so easy. I live alone and they were always by my side outside and at my feet as I relax in the evening. They excel at herding cattle, saved miles of walking for me and finding joy in having a job. Easy to train to go to their designated spot and wait to cross the road. Loved to play soccer with the kids at the fair. The only drawback to owning a border collie is the energy level. Please don't get a border collie if you can't provide the time to run them. They love 'fetch' with a tennis ball. I adore my dogs and wouldn't consider having anything else.

Just put my 12 yr old black lab/husky/Shepard down Oct. 12, 2017. I have heard Border Collies are great dogs. My dog was over 100 lbs. and was a house dog treated like one of the family. Now at 61 I need a smaller, very intelligent, uplifting dog.

Border Collie Breed Review by Abby Dibble

These dogs are fantastic dogs. They are high energy, but loving and so willing to learn. I've found they are prone to picking a single person they listen to, so in a family of many the puppy will gravitate to the one it feels is the strongest leader. As such, they tend to latch onto that one person and suffer anxiety when that person disappears for a long period of time. That being said, they will listen to others, especially if their designated person makes it known they want them to listen to other people.A person who decides to get one of these dogs should keep in mind that their energy needs to be directed somewhere. If they aren't challenged mentally and physically, they could turn destructive. As well, they can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for long periods of time. They are highly intelligent, and if there is no consistency in their training or commands, they will notice and try to push boundaries and see what they can get away with. They are fantastic dogs, and with anyone who has the time and experience of ownership they can be fantastic companions!!!

My all time favorite breed. They are super loyal, outrageously smart, and athletic. I've owned 2 border collies and both have been the best I could ask for. Not only do they make great companions but also excel in sports and (what they were bred for) herding. The intensity may be intimidating at first but once you give this breed a job to do you'll never want another breed again!

Border Collies are the smartest dogs. They are VERY high energy. They live to please their owners. They are loyal and protective. They require a lot of attention. They are extremely devoted to their owners and you owe it to them to be deserving of their love and devotion. Please do not get a Border Collie if you intend to leave her alone all day. She is FULL of energy.

The Border Collie is the most intelligent breed of dog. They are highly trainable and make great family pets if they have an owner who can give them the proper attention and structure that they need. Named after the border region between England and Scotland, this breed has often been used as a herding dog due to their great skill, agility, and awareness to their surroundings. They can also move very quickly in a crouched position, like a cat, which helps them with the task of herding. They have been used not only as herders, but sled dogs, search and rescue dogs, therapy & assistance dogs, and more.
