Puppy Mills are a tragic reality for many dogs. By working with reputable breeders and shelters, you can help destroy puppy mills and give dogs better lives. Here are a few ways you can help stop puppy mills in your town and around the world.
Keep your eyes open
There are several signs of puppy mills you can watch out for. If you see signs saying the specific breed and the price on the road you can call the number and address into the ASPCA or the Humane Society and they will look at the property to make sure no dogs are being harmed. You can also do this with other animals such as cats, hamsters, rabbits, and guinea pigs.
If the animals are treated well the family or business will continue and if not the puppies, mother, father, and other dogs on the premises will be taken to a shelter to stop further abuse.
Unless you want a puppy from a specific breed you should try your local shelters. They have plenty of wonderful puppies and grown dogs that would love a forever home. If you decide to adopt a pet from a shelter be sure to research the shelter before purchase. Find out how they treat their animals for diseases, what they feed the animals, and what goes into caring for the animals (do they get daily walks, is there an outdoor facility). After that you will want to meet with your possible new friend at least twice before taking them home. This way you won’t be surprised by their behavior and you will be able to set clear boundaries in possible training.
If you are adopting from a breeder be sure it is reputable. Visit the breeders at least three to four times to ensure the health of the puppies over time and the health of their parents. This way you know you will not have a pup with health problems or behavioral issues down the road. You should also hire a trainer if you decide to adopt from either a shelter or a breeder. They will be able to give you advice on how to train your dog and what to look for in terms of behavior and health.
If you cannot own a pet due to housing, health, or any other reason you can always donate your time or money. Donating your time is as easy as scheduling an hour or two at your local shelter. They will be so appreciative for the help. You can also donate unused dog and cat food, toys, and bowls for feedings. Otherwise you can simply send money online or via a check.
