Shar Pei Breed Review by Sharon Golden

I want to point out that I have owned 3 shar peis, 2 females and 1 male, in the last 15 years and I do not agree that they are a high energy dog, they can get excited but in general they tend to be very mellow at home and very independent, they do not need a lot of petting and are content to lie by your side. They require one good walk a day and as adults do not readily play with other dogs. They are extremely devoted and protective of their family. They also shed a fair amount and need their ears cleaned weekly, they tend to get ear infections because their ear canals are tight so air does not flow through which causes ear infections. Their life span is about 9 to 10 years.

SharPei are an unusual breed. They are aloof but love you with all they are. There are special care and health issues found only in Pei. Amazing! Love them dearly

Shar Pei Breed Review by Janell Lindsey

I have owned Shar-Pei since 2001...3 in all. Have always had at least 2. For me, this breed has proven perfect as I work long hours. They are content with exercise or being couch potatoes! I am with them whenever I'm at home and no matter where I am, they are. Not right on top of me, but I'm always in their sight. They have plenty of space outside an in which has of course required a doggie door. One of the best qualities is that these dogs don't bark just for the sake of barking. They do have some skin issues because their skin and wrinkles were built in for fighting with room and elasticity. The substance in their skin which is very thick and sticky will break out on their skin. But it comes and goes. With good care and heigene this is not a problem. They are not any more difficult to care for than other purebreds. They like to get attention more than giving it, but they are loyal entertaining, heart grabbing dogs!!! Sometimes their sad faces even smile!!!!!!

Greenfield Puppies

Originating in China, the Chinese Shar-Pei is an intelligent and active breed. It was at one time believed that the sight of their wrinkles and black lips would scare off evil spirits. Other identifiable features of the Shar-Pei include a “hippopotamus” shaped head, small sunken eyes, and a blue-black tongue. Regular grooming is needed for this pup, mainly requiring brushing, occasional bathing, nail clipping, and regular ear cleaning. This dog was originally used as a guard dog and to track vermin. They form a close bond with their family, but are also friendly with strangers. Without strong leadership, they will try to become the boss, so firm, confident training is best. Socialize them at an early age and they are good with children and cats. This is a moderately active breed and needs regular exercise. The Chinese Shar-Pei was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1992.
