Schnauzer-Standard Breed Review by Della Sherman

We currently have a Standard and a Mini Schnauzer. Standard is 1 1/2 and Mini is 12 and in poor health. We are looking for another Standard to replace our mini as we know he will not make it much longer. We have found that the Standards are much better family pets and want a companion for our other dog. they are easily trainable, and also a good watch dog.

The Standard Schnauzer is the original Schnauzer, soon followed by the Miniature Schnazuzer and Giant Schnauzer. Their name comes from the German “schnauze”, which means muzzle, referring to their well-known beard and mustache. Other key physical characteristics of this pup is their square build with a high-set tail and rectangular shaped head with high-set ears. They have a double coat consisting of a dense wiry outer coat over a soft undercoat. Their coat is black or salt & pepper. Grooming for this low shedding breed includes daily brushing and stripping of loose hair about twice a year. The Standard Schnauzer is a very alert breed. They have been used for many tasks such as guarding farms and ranches, catching small vermin, tracking, military work, search and rescue, and even as therapy dogs. They are very active and need daily walks and exercise. These pups are quick learners and require a confident owner who provides consistent training. They can be very protective and will try to be in charge, so their owner needs to show them that they are boss. The Standard Schnauzer was recognized by the AKC in 1904.
